An Israeli expert called Azerbaijan as a true example of inter-civilizational dialogue and geopolitical leader of South Caucasus.

"Azerbaijan is a true example of inter-civilizational dialogue and the geopolitical leader of the South Caucasus," Arye Gut has said in an interview to "International news" program broadcast on Israeli Reshet Bet radio, AzerTag state news agency reported.

Gut said Azerbaijan is located in a very advantageous, but geopolitically complex and volatile region. "Azerbaijan built and developed constructive relations with foreign countries," he said.

Speaking about the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Gut noted that for over 20 years Armenia had kept Azerbaijani lands under occupation, while more than one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs.

He blamed Yerevan, saying its non-constructive position had impeded the settlement of the dispute so far.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s. Long-standing efforts by U.S, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far. The UN Security Council has passed four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.

As a result of Armenia's military aggression, over 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed, 4,866 are reported missing and almost 100,000 were injured, and 50,000 were disabled.

Gut further said Azerbaijan was one of the world centers in terms of tolerance and multiculturalism. He noted that representatives of different nations and religions had co-existed in peace in Azerbaijan over the centuries.
