Turkey's National Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz will pay a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The minister's visit is scheduled for May 14-15, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry spokesman Vagif Dergahli told Trend Agency.

He further said there is a bilateral military cooperation plan between Azerbaijan and Turkey, which is approved annually.

Azerbaijani-Turkish joint field exercises were conducted in Baku and Nakhchivan in July 2013 and in the Turkish region of Kars in February 2014, Dergahli said, noting that similar events will be held in the future in accordance with the reached agreements.

Azerbaijan-Turkey relations have always been strong due to a common culture and history and mutual intelligibility of Turkish and Azerbaijani languages.

Turkey was the first country in the world to recognize Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 and has been a staunch supporter of Azerbaijan in its efforts to consolidate its independence, preserve its territorial integrity, and realize its economic potential that arise from the rich natural resources of the Caspian Sea.

The countries share a short 8km-border, with the Aras River separating Turkey from the Nakhchivan exclave.
