US embassy urges gov`t to probe attack on reporters
The US embassy in Baku has called on the Azerbaijani government to investigate a recent attack on two Radio Liberty correspondents in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The appeal urged authorities to apprehend those responsible for the attack, embassy spokesman Terry Davidson said.
Malahat Nasibova and her husband, Ilgar Nasibov, were beaten last Wednesday while covering a standoff between residents of the Nehram village and local police.
The journalists had met with the local population and had taken photos. According to witnesses, they were attacked by plainclothes policemen, who broke their microphones.
Elman Abbas, a representative of the Institute for Reporters` Safety and Freedom, a local NGO, was also beaten.
"In a democratic society, journalists should be able to work without interference or physical assault," Davidson said.
The Prague-based Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has also condemned the attack.
"Azerbaijan is a dangerous place for journalists, but the risk is magnified in Nakhchivan, where arbitrariness seems to be the only rule," said RFE/RL President Jeffrey Gedmin. "Our people have faced repeated attacks here. I expect the government in Baku to investigate this latest incident and take concrete steps to demonstrate that the rights and safety of journalists matter, and that Azerbaijan is accountable to international standards for media freedom, even here."
According to Radio Liberty, the two correspondents for Radio Azadliq, RFE/RL`s Azerbaijani Service, were reporting a story live at a local market in the Babek district of the Nakhchivan enclave when a mob, allegedly incited by local police, attacked them. The journalists received numerous cuts and bruises during the attack, RFE/RL said.
