Baku, Hanoi explore ways to enhance parliamentary co-op
By Nigar Orujova
Azerbaijani Ambassador in Hanoi Anar Imanov has met President of Vietnam's National Assembly Nguyen Sinh Hung, discussing ways to develop parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
Last year, Azerbaijan and Vietnam dramatically improved bilateral parliamentary relations.
In the meeting, the sides stressed the importance of the visit of Vice Chairman of Vietnam's National Assembly Uong Chu Luu to Azerbaijan, and hailed the launch of inter-parliamentary working groups at both countries' parliaments, saying this boosted "friendly relations" between Azerbaijan and Vietnam.
Imanov lauded Sinh Hung's contribution to strengthening relations between Azerbaijani and Vietnamese legislative authorities. He said Azerbaijani high-ranking officials will visit Vietnam this year.
Imanov also highlighted the consequences of Armenia`s military aggression against Azerbaijan.
Sinh Hung said Vietnam was ready to improve partnership between the two countries and asked Imanov to invite the Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker to the 132nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which will take place in Vietnam in the early 2015.
Azerbaijani-Vietnam cooperation is fast developing. Azerbaijan opened its embassy in Vietnam last December, while the Azerbaijan-Vietnam inter-parliamentary friendship group was established in Hanoi in November 2013. The group includes six members of Vietnam's National Assembly.
In October 2013, Vietnam simplified the visa regime for Azerbaijani citizens, making it possible for Azerbaijani citizens to obtain a visa upon arrival at Vietnam's airports.
Vietnam does not have an embassy in Azerbaijan, which has made it difficult for Azerbaijani citizens to obtain visas. According to the new rules, Azerbaijani citizens only need to provide the relevant documents given by the Vietnamese travel agencies regarding their trip in order to get a visa.
