Police official allegedly suspected of link to mosque blast
A law enforcement official has been arrested due to his alleged
link to Sunday`s explosion at a mosque in Baku.
Ali Akhundov, a criminologist in the Sabayil district police department, was detained during an operation conducted by officers of the Interior Ministry`s department on fighting organized crime, the district prosecutor`s office said.
Illegal ammunition and religious literature had been discovered in Akhundov`s office and the Sabayil court charged him with illegal possession and proliferation of firearms, ammunition and explosives.
Akhundov was collecting information about the explosion that rocked the Abu Bakr mosque in the Narimanov district of Baku, and is a supporter of radical Wahhabism, a law enforcement source said.
The shrine that was attacked is mainly attended by followers of Wahhabism.
However, Ehsan Zahidov, the Interior Ministry spokesman, said the ministry was unaware of Akhundov`s arrest.
Three people were reported killed and ten injured after two hand grenades were thrown during a prayer service at the mosque at about 8.50 p.m. on Sunday. The grenades had landed in the main facility where men were praying. The attack has caused a public outcry.
Since the blast, Emin Rasulov, 24, who comes from the southern Astara district, has been detained as a suspect and charged with inciting ethnic and religious hatred. During a search conducted at Rasulov`s rented apartment in the capital, books inciting hate were confiscated, law enforcement officials said.
