Azerbaijan joins UN conference  against corruption

The fifth session of the conference of the states parties to the UN Convention against Corruption "COSP5" was held in Panama City on December 3, AzerTag state news agency reported.

The conference brought together 1540 representatives from over 130 member states, parliaments, inter-governmental organizations, civil society, the private sector and journalists.

A delegation led by Azerbaijani Justice Minister Fikret Mammadov attended the conference.

The Azerbaijani delegation also included MP, Member of the Anti-Corruption Commission Bakhtiyar Aliyev, Director of the Anti-Corruption Department under the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Kamran Aliyev, and officials of the ministry.

The session featured discussions on the implementation of the UN convention against corruption, the prevention, activity of the law enforcement authorities, international cooperation and other actual issues.

The high level opening of COSP5 was addressed by Executive Director of the UNODC Yury Fedotov and President of Panama Ricardo Martinelli and Executive Secretary of the National Council for Transparency against Corruption Abigail Benzadon.

Fikret Mammadov addressed the event and informed about the works done to combat the corruption in the country.

He gave information on the country`s achievements in this field, noting President Ilham Aliyev`s strong political will in this regard.

The conference ended with the adoption of relevant documents on the current issues of the agenda.

The next session of the conference will be held in Russia in 2015.

The Azerbaijani delegation held a number of meetings with high-ranking officials of the several countries and international organizations on the sidelines of the conference.
