Election body head: Azerbaijani society should be ready for fair vote
By Aynur Jafarova
Political stability in Azerbaijan and the conditions provided at the polling stations are demonstrated to the world as an example of preparations for the elections, chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mazahir Panahov said at the Independent Press Centre on October 2.
According to Panahov, one of the most important factors is conducting transparent and fair elections in accordance with international standards and first of all, the society should be ready to ensure this happens.
The CEC chairman went on to say that around 40,000 observers have been registered to observe the presidential election in Azerbaijan.
"There are more than 1,300 international observers representing leading organizations," he said.
Touching on the establishment of the Independent Press Centre, Panahov said this facility has been provided with the necessary equipment and meets all due requirements.
He called on the leaders of all political parties in Azerbaijan to use the services of the centre.
"This centre is open for holding various press conferences as well as for applications," he said. "The candidates may bring their booklets and information materials."
According to Panahov, the CEC is dealing with Azerbaijani pilgrims' voting.
He said Azerbaijani pilgrims in Saudi Arabia will be able to vote in their country's presidential elections. A relevant agreement is expected to be reached soon.
"According to Saudi Arabia's laws, if there is no official permission one cannot engage in political activity in the country," he added. "We should obtain permission to conduct voting. If Saudi Arabia agrees, Azerbaijani pilgrims will be able to vote in the elections."
Azerbaijan will hold elections on October 9 to elect its president for the next five-year term. According to the Constitution, the President of Azerbaijan is elected through general, direct and equal elections, by free, private and secret voting.
Azerbaijani citizens who have the right of election, initiative groups of electors, political parties and blocs of political parties are entitled to nominating candidates.
Campaigning for next month's presidential election, which started on September 16, continues with ten candidates.
