Americans prefer Sufism in Islam, cleric says
Religious tolerance reigns in the United States but Americans seem to prefer Sufism when it comes to Islam, the Azerbaijani clerical leader has said.
"This is what I concluded based upon my own observations," Sheikh Allahshukur Pashazada, the Caucasus Clerical Office chairman, recently said.
"In America, they want Muslims to be self-reserved, therefore, Sufism is spreading there more, as it involves sectarianism but not statehood," he told journalists.
Sufism is the inner or mystical dimension of Islam. A practitioner of this tradition is generally known as a Sufi, though some senior members of the tradition reserve this term for those who have attained the goals of Sufism.
