Aliyev endorses state support of media
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has endorsed a plan for the
state supporting the development of mass media in Azerbajan.
The measure seeks to develop cooperation between government agencies and the media, increase the media`s economic independence and boost the professionalism of journalists, as well as promote the role of the media in building civil society.
Under the decree, the President`s Office will oversee the enforcement of the measure`s provisions. The President`s Office was also instructed to develop proposals on establishing a fund to assist in the development of the media within the next three months.
A different presidential decree, issued last Thursday, calls for lump sum financial aid to be provided to local print media. The funds will be allocated from the President`s Reserve Fund. The assistance, worth 5,000 manats ($6,100), will benefit 38 mass media consisting of eight news agencies and 30 daily newspapers.
