Bird flu no threat for Azerbaijan: gov't

Bird flu, which has spread in Italy, poses no threat to Azerbaijan, according to the Azerbaijani government.

"Azerbaijan imports poultry and poultry products only from Turkey, USA, and Brazil, and tribal eggs from Iran, Turkey and Bulgaria. Therefore, bird influenza that spread in Italy does not threaten Azerbaijan," the State Veterinary Service under the Agriculture Ministry said on August 26.

The Service has received information about the virus from the International Office of Epizootics, as well as instructions on ways of controlling it.

Outbreak of the bird flu virus H7 strain was recorded on August 21 in the north Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Some half a million chickens were killed at a poultry farm near Mordano, the province of Ravenna.

Earlier, a similar measure was taken on a farm near Ferrara, where 128,000 hens were slaughtered. Both farms are owned by the same producer, San Paolo. Veterinary control on the ground was tightened, disinfection was carried out and quarantine was declared within a radius of 10 kilometers around the farms.
