A digital tectonic map of the Caucasus with the scale of 1:500000 will be issued for the first time with the application of a geographic information system. The issuance of the map is expected in 2014.

The decision was made at the end of the international project "Caucasus tectonics", which has been implemented with the involvement of the Institute of Geology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The results of the three-year project, implemented with the support of Swiss National Science Foundation, have been discussed at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Head of the geotectonics and regional geology department of the Institute of Geology, PhD Talat Kangarli and young scientist Tofig Rashidov participated at the debate.

The discussions focused on information obtained by scientists from the South Caucasus countries, Russia and Switzerland.

The Azerbaijani scientists also took part at a two-day familiarization tour on Swiss geology organized at the Jura Mountains.

The Research and Study Society of Azerbaijan dealing with research in the fileds of geology and geophysics was established in 1926. The formation and development of the institution coincided with a period of the rapid development of Azerbaijan's oil and gas industry.

The main research trends include geology and oil-and-gas geochemistry, oil and gas fields development, petrology and metallogeny, regional geology, and earth physics.

Scientific achievements and their passing on from one generation to another have allowed the Institute to become a major scientific institution of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, which is fully engaged in substantial work in the field of Earth Sciences.
