Armenian spies` infiltration attempt thwarted

23 July 2008 20:13 (UTC+04:00)
A group of Armenian spies tried to cross over to Azerbaijan through a village in the frontline Tovuz district on Saturday. One of the arch-foe country`s intelligence officers was killed in the infiltration attempt prevented by Azerbaijani frontier guards, while the others managed to escape.
The Armenian Defense Ministry`s spokesman Seyran Shahsuvarian claimed that the officer had crossed over to Azerbaijan after losing his way and was shot dead by Azerbaijani soldiers.
The Azerbaijan Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroglu dismissed the statement as false, saying the Armenians were attempting to enter the country for spying purposes. As for returning the dead body to Armenia, Sabiroglu said the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was dealing with the matter and work was under way to arrange the transfer.
A similar attempt by the Armenian intelligence had been thwarted in the past months. Another group of spies was seized by Azerbaijani law enforcers and is currently withheld in the country.
