Jewish politicians not to recognize `Armenian genocide`: MP
Jewish politicians have no intention to recognize the alleged Armenian genocide, an Israeli lawmaker has said.
"It was not the Turks who were killing Armenians, but on the contrary, the Armenians were exterminating the Turks," said head of the Israel-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary group, member of the Israeli Knesset, Joseph Shagal.
Armenians say Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million people in the early 20th century, a claim strongly denied by Turkey. Ankara says the developments resulted from disturbances that took place during the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
Shagal told Russkaya Liniya (Russian Line) news agency that the Israeli parliament would pass an unbiased decision on the "genocide" issue.
Shagal said Israel and Azerbaijan shared "unbreakable bonds". "Tel-Aviv backs the country`s territorial integrity. Tens of mutual official visits are paid to the two countries every year."
The MP made it clear that Armenia represented no strategic importance for the Israeli government, and its diplomatic and economic relations with this country were strictly of formal nature.
"True, a group of Armenians lives in Jerusalem, but this community is showing no activeness if we don`t mention their violations of Israeli law, evasion of military service and tax payments. For this reason I don`t believe that Israel will accept Armenian notorious allegations to the detriment of its own interests," Shagal said.
Leader of Azerbaijan`s Mountain Jews community, Semyon Ikhiilov, expressed confidence that the Knesset will never recognize the Armenian "genocide" as a powerful group of lawmakers supporting the Azerbaijani cause is represented in the Israeli legislature. Ikhiilov said his community had embarked on steps to counter recognition of the fake genocide in the Knesset.
