President Aliyev opens facilities in Shirvan (UPDATE)

President Ilham Aliyev opened a number of facilities during his visit to Shirvan on July 1, AzerTag state news agency reported.

The President first laid flowers at the monument to National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the city center.

Head of the Shirvan City Executive Authority Mardan Jamalov informed the President about the work done in the Shirvan region.

President Aliyev formally inaugurated Janub Power Station in Shirvan.

First the President paid tribute to the memory of Heydar Aliyev and laid flowers at a statue of the national leader in the courtyard of the power station.

The groundbreaking of the facility was held in 2007. The 780 megawatt station, which occupies a total area of 20 hectares, will employ 215 people. The facility will make a significant contribution to ensuring energy security of the country.

President Aliyev was photographed in the courtyard of the station and took a bus tour around the facility.

The head of state also viewed "Sahil" Pump Station.

The pump station operates three gas compressors with a capacity of 80,000 cubic meters per hour. A water cooling system has been created on Kura River. It consists of four pumps with two collectors. There are two auxiliary trigger and heating boilers there as well. The station also operates a water treatment system comprising two units with a capacity of 100 tons per hour. The equipment installed at the Sahil pump station meets the latest requirements.

The President also enquired about the operation of the indoor 330/220/110-kilovolt GIS substation.

Aliyev also reviewed the control center of the station. Monitoring of the premises is carried out by surveillance cameras. The plant equipment is switched on and off from there.

The head of state also commissioned the Janub power station. After viewing the facility the President met with representatives of the public.

City resident Tofig Huseynov expressed his gratitude to the President for the attention and care for the development of Shirvan.

President Aliyev also attended a ceremony to launch water supply to the city of Shirvan from Shirvan-Mughan water channel.

More than 15,000 people are receiving water on a round-the-clock basis via Shirvan-Mughan group water channel. Once construction of the domestic network is completed the number of people supplied with water will reach 35,000.

The President met constructors of the channel there and instructed them to carry out the work in line with modern standards.

On the same day President Aliyev officially inaugurated Shirvan Olympic Sport Complex.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility took place in 2010.

Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov told the President that the total area of the complex was 4.5 hectares. The complex will have a 44-bed hotel.

The head of state was informed of the projects to repair and reconstruct Olympic Movement Museum and Hand Games Palace.

The complex has an auditorium and offices. It has a 980-seat facility for football, volleyball and basketball competitions, as well as a pool. It also has a 1,020-seat football stadium, and mini-football and basketball pitches.

President Aliyev then inaugurated Ammunition Utilization Center at Araz factory of the Defense Industry Ministry, and opened a large-caliber cartridge production center in Shirvan.

The President examined a layout of the center for the disposal of ammunition.

Defense Industry Minister Yaver Jamalov informed the President that the center was established jointly with the Polish company Jakush. The center covering an area of 12 hectares consists of 24 sites, which are located at a safe distance from each other and are surrounded by a security fence. To implement the disposal process there are 20 modular containers, a transformer substation, storage facilities for explosives of various disposal products, a disposal camera, a compressor, a site for the assessment of the technical condition of ammunition, etc.

President Aliyev watched a film about the disposal center.

The center is intended for demilitarization of different caliber armor-piercing projectiles, artillery mines, grenades, jet mines, fuses, signal and tracer cartridges by means of separation into constituent parts, pressing and melting of ejection and explosive components, their accumulation, reshaping and packaging.

The Commander-in-Chief watched the process of disposal.

Then President Aliyev arrived at the center for stuffing munitions of the Araz plant in Shirvan. The President watched a film about the activity of the center.

The total area of the center is 4,000 square meters. It operates special equipment for filling 60, 82 and 120-mm mines with explosives.

While reviewing the workflow, President Aliyev was informed that the center carries out filling of 60-mm mine shells with TNT by pressing and 82 and 120-mm mines with a mixture of explosives (TNT and TNT-dinitronaphthalene). The center is fitted with the necessary production and testing equipment. The production floor operates four lines. The first line has process areas for disassembly and preparations for the filling of 60-mm mines, while the second line is designated for disassembly and preparations for the filling of 82 and 120-mm mines, the third conveying line is meant for 120-mm projectiles, and the fourth one for 60 and 82-mm munitions.

The President was informed that the center can ensure the filling and assembly of 20,000 60-mm, 40,000 82-mm and 40,000 120-mm mines in a one-shift operation mode each year.

President Aliyev also visited the Flag Square as part of his visit to Shirvan.

As in most regions of Azerbaijan, the recently established Flag Square and the state flag erected in Shirvan stand out for their grandeur. The Flag Square is located on Heydar Aliyev Avenue, at the entrance to the city of Shirvan.

The President was informed that the flag flutters on a 76-meter high pole. The square occupies a total area of 1.3 hectares.

On the pedestal faced with natural marble, there is an engraved map of Azerbaijan, words of the national anthem and the national coat of arms.

President Aliyev praised the work carried out on the Flag Square.
