Ethnic Armenian youngster gets 14 years in jail for sexual abuse
An ethnic Armenian charged with sexually abusing and beating his
underage half-brother and half-sister was handed down a 14-year
jail term at the Grave Crimes Court of Baku on Monday. The sentence
to the city resident, Edgar Sarkisian, was pronounced in conclusion
of a trial that started last week.
In his closing statement, Sarkisian had requested the court to allow him to go to another country, warning that he would commit suicide if he ended up in prison.
As indicated in the indictment, the 23-year-old defendant`s mother, Elmira Gurbanova, had given birth to two children during her second marriage to an Azerbaijani - a girl who is now seven and a boy who is 10. Edgar, her son from the first marriage, had refused to accept the children and subjected them to sexual abuse. When the mother was told about the abuse, Edgar resorted to beating his half-brother. Gurbanova, who saw that things were spinning out of control, informed the police. Edgar was subsequently arrested.
Sarkisian had been previously convicted for three years over theft.
