Azerbaijan, US to co-op in fighting bioterrorism

The institutions of Azerbaijan and United States have launched joint struggle against bioterrorism.
Under an agreement reached by the National Scientific Research Prevention Institute and U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the two entities will cooperate in conducting research to prevent the proliferation of perilous diseases.
Bioterrorism is terrorism by intentional release or dissemination of biological agents such as bacteria, viruses or toxins, which may be in a naturally-occurring or in a human-modified form. Over half of world countries are affected by it today, with US citizens being the most prone to the threat. The steps being taken by the Azerbaijani institute aim to ward off the threat. Although such diseases are non-existent in the country, experts do not rule out the possibility of bioterrorism on Azerbaijani soil.
"As a result of the research we have carried out, we acquired a lot of proteins and oils from the plants growing in the country. Such medicine will help us cope with the most serious diseases," Academician Namig Aliyev said.
