Torrential rains claim two lives in rural Azerbaijan
Torrential rains across Azerbaijani regions caused human casualties on Tuesday, along with inflicting considerable damage.
The calamity damaged a bridge belonging to Azerkorpu JSC in the Siyazan district. A Niva brand car brought in to assist in eliminating the aftermath plunged into the Gilgilchay river. One of the three persons riding in the vehicle, Mingachevir city resident Divani Nasirov, drowned. The lives of two others were saved.
In another development, a torrent flooded the Ziv river in the Dashkasan district on Tuesday night. A commander of a military unit based in the region, 26-year-old Rasul Mammadov, was carried away by the torrent.
The Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroghlu said search for the serviceman was under way along the river bank but no results had been achieved yet.
Weather conditions have been unstable in the country in the past days. The downpour has damaged bridges linking a number of villages in the northern Guba district. In addition to that, numerous electricity and communication poles have flipped in many regions. In Khachmaz, land under grain crops has become unusable. Torrential rains also flooded the basements in houses and the streets, and blocked traffic on both roads and highways.
Teams of the Emergencies Ministry are working on-site to eliminate the aftermath of the flood.*
