Azeri peacekeeper dies in Iraq
An Azerbaijani soldier serving as part of the peacekeeping
contingent in Iraq has died. The death was caused not by a terror
act but an accident, an Iraqi diplomatic source told
AssA-Irada.
The 20-year-old serviceman, Rafael Aghayev, died as a result of negligent handling of his gun. He had accidentally touched the trigger of his weapon while turning it in, his family members told the press.
This was the first human casualty during the Azerbaijani armed forces' peacekeeping mission in the country.
Azerbaijan's 150-people-strong contingent in Iraq is replaced on a semi-annual basis. Its mission is to guard a hydro-power plant in the town of Al-Hadida.
