Norwegian embassy protested over denial of visas
A group uniting Azeris worldwide has come out against the Norwegian embassy in Baku after the diplomatic mission denied visas to its members.
Representatives of the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC), including the head of its Azeri representation Ismayil Aghayev, had planned to attend an event in Stockholm and applied for Norwegian visas, which would allow them to travel to the Swedish capital. However, the embassy denied the visas to most of the invitees without providing an explanation, the Congress told AssA-Irada.
The WAC office in Azerbaijan, the group's youth organization and a number of activists issued a joint statement on Tuesday condemning the move.
"We do not understand these actions by the Norwegian embassy and consider them contradictory to human rights and freedoms," the statement said. "This runs counter to relevant provisions of the European Human Rights Convention."
The WAC demanded a scrutiny into the incident and called on the Norwegian government to officially provide grounds for the denial of the visas. It warned that otherwise it would avail of all means, including appeals to courts, to resolve the issue within international legal norms.
The Norwegian embassy was not immediately available for comment.
