Azerbaijani president reveres memory of National Academy of Sciences head

A farewell ceremony with the president of Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences, academician Mahmud Karimov was held in the main building of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the ceremony.

Scholars, MPs and intellectuals working in various fields also attended the ceremony.

Mahmud Karimov will be buried at the first Alley of Honour. The 65-year old died of a sudden heart attack.

Karimov was born in the town of Irevan on October 18, 1948. After moving with his family to Baku, he finished secondary school. He received higher education at the physics faculty of Azerbaijan State University in 1966-1971.

He also studied at the post-graduate course of the Radiation Research Branch of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences in 1975-1978. He defended his doctoral thesis in semiconductor and dielectric physics.

In 2001 he was elected a full member of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences followed by becoming president of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences that year.
