Aliyev blames world for indifference to Garabagh problem
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has called on the world community to step up effort at settling the long-running conflict with Armenia over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh and to take action at fostering peace.
Addressing a special Milli Majlis session dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Azerbaijani parliament on Thursday, the president said the international community has been showing indifference to the problem so far.
"Azerbaijan's only unresolved problem is the Garabagh conflict…We are trying to resolve the conflict in peace. But this is not based on someone's baseless wishes, it has to be a fair solution."
Aliyev reiterated that the conflict settlement was possible strictly in line with international legal norms.
"If world nations ignore international law, chaos will come about in the world and confidence in international organizations will be completely lost. Therefore, international groups stating their decisions concerning the conflict should respect themselves. The aggressor state [Armenia] should be demanded to put an end to occupation," the head of state said.
He stressed that Armenian occupying forces must withdraw from Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territories, otherwise, threats and tension will exacerbate in the region. The lingering dispute remains a source of threats not only for Azerbaijan but the entire region, he said.
President Aliyev reminded that the UN has passed four resolutions on the unconditional pullout of the Armenian forces. Armenian occupation was also confirmed in the latest resolution passed at the UN General Assembly in mid-March.
"Moreover, the Organization for Islamic Conference, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and other international organizations are defending our position. But despite all this, no results have been achieved, as Armenia is ignoring the resolutions on Upper Garabagh adopted by international organizations."
Aliyev said Azerbaijan's territorial integrity will be restored any time. He reiterated Baku's intransigent stance, saying its greatest concession in the conflict resolution could be granting the status of the highest self-administration to the region.
Some 200 representatives of 41 countries and international organizations attended the jubilee session of the Azerbaijani parliament. Nine of the countries were represented by their speakers and 12 by their vice-speakers.
The first Azerbaijani parliament was established in the period of the Azerbaijan People's Republic in 1918-1920 as a legislative body of the first-ever Oriental democracy. The parliament was in place for 17 months.
