The Senate of the US state of New Mexico on Monday formally recognized the Khojaly massacre committed against Azerbaijanis by Armenians during the 1990s war, Azerbaijan's state news agency Azertag reported.

The resolution recognizing the mass killings of Azerbaijani civilians was introduced to the upper chamber of the state's legislature by Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino (D).

The document describes the nature of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and details of the massacre of more than 600 Azerbaijani civilians including children, women and the elderly, committed by Armenian armed forces on February 25-26, 1992.

The resolution of the New Mexico Senate recognizing Khojaly Massacre was unanimously passed after 35 senators voted for it.

The author of the resolution underlines that "...many civilians' bodies found in Khojaly after the fight were disfigured and mutilated, making this one of the most inhumane and barbaric battles of the war".

The document points out that 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan, including its Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven adjacent districts, is under occupation of Armenian armed forces, despite the UN Security Council resolutions condemning the occupation of Azerbaijani land.

Besides, in the U.S. the states of Texas, New Jersey, Georgia and Maine have recognized the Khojaly genocide.

Moreover, the parliaments of Turkey, Pakistan and Mexico have recognized the Khojaly massacre as genocide.

Also, recently, the eighth session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, also adopted a resolution recognizing the mass killings as genocide.

In just a few hours, 613 civilians were killed, including 106 women, 70 elderly and 83 children in Khojaly on that bloody night. A total of 1,000 civilians were disabled. 56 people were killed with outrageous brutality, eight families were totally exterminated, and 25 children lost both parents, while 130 children lost at least one parent, in what became the most brutal crackdown on civilians during the three years of the conflict's military phase. Moreover, 1,275 innocent people were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 remains unknown.

Besides, the New Mexico Senate adopted a resolution on the importance of the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the U.S, the Azerbaijani Consulate General in Los Angeles told Trend news agency on Wednesday.

The resolution stressed Azerbaijan's successful development, its importance as a strong partner of the U.S and the importance of strengthening the relations with allies such as Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani Consul General in Los Angeles Nasimi Agayev addressed the plenary session of the Senate of New Mexico.

Agayev emphasized the great potential for successful cooperation between Azerbaijan and the state of New Mexico in a number of areas. He also informed about Azerbaijan's willingness to fully develop its relations with New Mexico. The Consul General stressed the importance of mutual visits, stressing the appropriateness of a New Mexico delegation's visit to Azerbaijan this year.

A similar resolution was adopted by the House of Representatives of the state on Monday.
