Baku calls on Minsk Group to step up peace efforts

The position of Azerbaijan on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is that the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the peace process should be more active in the conflict settlement, a Presidential Administration official was quoted by Trend news agency as saying.

Elnur Aslanov, head of Political Analysis and Information Provision Department, told journalists that the OSCE should urge Armenia to end the occupation of Azerbaijani territory.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a precarious cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces have since occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory. Peace talks, brokered by the Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, have been largely fruitless so far. Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on its pullout from Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven surrounding regions.

"Not only the Minsk Group, but also the countries included in it should be active," Aslanov said. "We have repeatedly appealed to the world community over this. It is necessary to put an end to the violation of [Azerbaijan's] territorial integrity, to the steps contradicting international law, and to the aggression of one state against another."

He added that many countries are passive in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
