Baku facing water pollution problem
70 per cent of contaminated water in Baku is dumped into the soil
or sea, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Baghirov
has said.
Baghirov said this was a serious environmental problem facing the capital. Purification of contaminated water leaves a lot to be desired.
"Only the Hovsan purification facility is operating to 30 per cent of its capacity on the Absheron Peninsula," he told a news conference on Friday.
The minister said upgrade of the city's sewer system alone required investments to the tune of billions of manats. "If Azersu [water supply company] completes the repair of its facilities within two years, not a drop of polluted water will flow into the sea."
Baghirov added that a 61 km area has been purified on the northern coast of Absheron in the past four months.
