Baku humanitarian forum kicks off, Azeri president attends opening

An international humanitarian forum started in the Azerbaijani capital Baku on Thursday in a ceremony attended by President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, the state news agency AzerTac reported.

The Baku International Humanitarian Forum is a high-profile global scientific and political platform for tackling the challenges facing humanity in the 21st century, holding discussions and exchange of views on a wide range of issues of humanitarian cooperation.

With its rich traditions of co-existence among different cultures, civilizations and religions, Azerbaijan is an ideal venue for holding such events.

About 700 representatives from 70 countries, including 11 Nobel Prize winners, 10 former presidents, heads of numerous countries' governments, ministers, well-known educators, men of science and culture are in attendance.

The main goal of the Baku forum is to create humanitarian and integration incentives, along with bringing humanitarian issues to the forefront of global agenda.

Baku declaration will be adopted following discussions on various issues both at the plenary and departmental meetings to be held as part of the event.

The objective of the forum is to foster grounds for exchange of ideas, theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as for constructive debate.

Outcomes of the forum will be reflected in recommendations and calls to be made to international organizations and countries.

The forum features roundtable meetings on themes including humanitarian aspects of economic growth models; converging technologies and outlines of the future; modern mass media and new challenges; the traditional system of values in a post-modernist culture; new approaches to the processes of globalization in the 21st century. Discussions also cover technologies, modern medicine, and molecular biology; as well as multiculturalism.

Tours to the capital city and regions of Azerbaijan will be organized for the participants of the two-day forum. They will also be familiarized with the Azerbaijani people's abundant cultural legacy and art.

The first Baku International Humanitarian Forum under the slogan "21st century: hopes and challenges" took place in October 2011. The forum organizers are Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Russia's Vladimir Putin.
