Members of Karabakh Azeri community to visit U.S.

Representatives of the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation, plan to visit the U.S, chairman of the community, Bayram Safarov, told media Monday.

Safarov said the date of the visit has not yet been scheduled. Besides the U.S., members of the community will visit a number of European countries.

The visits aim to convey the truth about the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he said.

Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding Azerbaijani regions have been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a 1990s war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted up to one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. The separatist regime in Nagorno Karabakh declared so-called independence at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991, but it has not been recognized by the world community.

Peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
