New foreign passports to be issued

Foreign passports will be replaced with new ones in Azerbaijan under changes effective from June 1, 2013.

The new IDs, which will have more pages, will stand out for containing more data and electronic information.

According to Nargiz Maharramova, an Interior Ministry official, the new passports to be made by a Swiss company will be biometric.

The passport will have a micro-chip containing the citizen`s electronic signature and fingerprints.

Maharramova said children aged under one will be granted passports for one year, those under three - for three years, and those aged between three and 18 - for five years. Citizens older than 18 will receive passports for a 10-year term.

The fee for passport issuance remains unchanged. Citizens seeking to receive passports within 30 days will pay 40 manats ($51), while the fee for a passport issued over five days is 120 manats ($153).

Current passports are to be replaced after their term of validity expires.
