Two officers injured by mine blast

Two officers of Azerbaijani armed forces have been severely injured by a mine explosion on the contact line with Armenian troops, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry said Monday.

Both officers -- chief of engineering service Zafir Mammadov and department head of the same service of the military unit, Ilgar Verdiyev, were hospitalized.

Officials said Mammadov lost his leg in the blast, while Verdiyev`s arm had to be amputated.

Verdiyev previously served as deputy spokesman of the Defense Ministry. He is one of the first Azerbaijani officers who received military education in neighboring Turkey.

The incident was reported as the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said its positions along the contact line came under 24-hour shelling by Armenian armed forces.

No casualties were reported.

At least nine soldiers on both sides were killed in shootouts last week in a surge of tensions over the unresolved decades-old conflict, which has been simmering since a 1994 cease-fire.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. Large quantities of explosives remain in the frontline regions.
