Azerbaijan appeals to Iran over detained writers

Azerbaijan has formally appealed to Iran to enquire about two young Azerbaijani writers reportedly detained in the neighboring country, Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev said Tuesday.

Baku forwarded two relevant notes to Tehran, with one submitted by the Azerbaijani embassy in the Iranian capital and the other one - by the country`s consulate-general in Tabriz.

According to Abdullayev, the Iranian government did not formally confirm that the two Azerbaijani citizens -- Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizada -- are currently in Iran. Baku has sent several letters and held a number of meetings with Iranian officials, but these efforts have been fruitless so far.
