Delay in US envoy appointment not to affect Azeri ties: think-tank head
The delay in the appointment of a US ambassador to Azerbaijan will not affect the relations between the two countries but could produce an impression that Azerbaijan is not very important for the U.S. and its policy in the region, Jamestown Foundation president Glen Howard was quoted by the Baku-based APA news agency as saying.
``So, the delay in appointing an ambassador is a problem because it does not go down well with Azerbaijan,`` Howard said. ``Azerbaijan hopes that this issue will be resolved in the soonest time possible. But it is certainly a signal that the U.S. has confusion in its strategic views on the region.``
President Barack Obama appointed Matthew Bryza, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary, as US Ambassador to Azerbaijan bypass the Senate on December 29, 2010 under a so-called recess appointment. But Bryza had to end his one-year diplomatic mission and return to Washington in early January 2012 after his final approval in the Senate was blocked by several pro-Armenian senators claiming his bias toward Azerbaijan.
