Aliyev: Azerbaijan backs int`l efforts on nuclear security

Azerbaijan supports the international community`s efforts to ensure nuclear security, President Ilham Aliyev said at the International Nuclear Security Summit in the South Korean capital Seoul last week, Azerbaijan`s state news agency AzerTAc reported.

In his speech, President Aliyev said nuclear terrorism was a priority issue for all world countries, including Azerbaijan.

The president said Azerbaijan respects and fulfills international resolutions on nuclear security.

Speaking about nuclear security in the region, Aliyev noted that Armenia`s nuclear power plant, which was built in the 1970s, has become obsolete and poses a threat.

``It does not meet modern standards and is located in a seismic zone,`` he said.

The Azerbaijani leader stressed the importance of the summit, expressing confidence that it would be a success in terms of conducting discussions on nuclear security challenges.

The final Seoul communique was adopted at a plenary session of the summit. Leaders agreed to hold the next nuclear security summit in the Netherlands in 2014.
