Analyst: Iran wants Azerbaijan to be under its clout
In light of the recent tension between Azerbaijan and Iran, we decided to learn the views of Azerbaijani experts on the prospects of relations between the two neighboring countries.
Relations between Baku and Tehran have been strained since Israel last month signed a $1.6 billion deal to sell drones, anti-aircraft and missile defense systems to Azerbaijan, bringing Israeli technology to the border of archenemy Iran.
AzerNews staff writer Nargiz Ahmedova has approached Vafa Guluzade, a scholar on Oriental and Arab studies, President of the Foundation for Political Studies of the Caspian region. He served as foreign policy advisor for Azerbaijani President from 1990-1999 and is an expert on conflict resolution.
Q. In your opinion, how could the last visit of Azerbaijani defense minister Safar Abiyev to Iran ease tension that has recently emerged between Azerbaijan and its neighbor?
A. It cannot ease it absolutely, because the ambitions of Iran are for Azerbaijan to be a pro-Iranian country and to follow Iranian instructions. However, Azerbaijan is an independent country and acts from the standpoint of its national interests, in particular, in its cooperation with the West, USA and Israel. We were and are doing so and will continue to do that. And Iran, concerned that the U.S. might attack it, wants to see Azerbaijan, as they say, under its clout.
Q. In the backdrop of recent political developments, could Iran change its attitude toward the Nagorno Karabakh conflict?
A. Nothing depends on their position. Let them change it any way they want. In any case they provide Armenia with everything possible. They once saved Armenia from a collapse, providing it with fuel and a wide range of goods.
Q. However, if this visit does not defuse tension in the relations between Baku and Tehran, which actions by Iran should we be ready for?
A. For example, Iran is trying to perpetrate terrorist acts in Azerbaijan, and that is what we have to be ready for. Iran would not dare to do more. Iran is incapable of staging a coup in Azerbaijan. It is beyond its power. They will just be attempting to commit terror acts (against US, Israeli and other diplomatic missions in Baku) which would put Azerbaijan in an awkward position before the West. A group (planning such attacks) has just been neutralized and relevant reports have been broadcast by numerous TV channels, including Euronews.
Q. So, do you think these attempts could reoccur in the future?
A. This could happen again, why not.
