EU welcomes release of opposition activist jailed over 2011 protest
The European Union has welcomed the release on February 22 of Elshan Hasanov, who was jailed as a result of his participation in the antigovernment protest on April 2, 2011.
"This is an important step taken by Azerbaijan in its efforts to strengthen the respect for fundamental rights and freedoms in the country," the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan said in a statement. "The EU Delegation hopes that the decision will encourage the release of all other participants to the April 2nd rally."
The EU Delegation said it will continue to assist Azerbaijan in fulfilling its commitments with regards to democracy and rule of law.
