Azeri first lady hosts French senators

Azerbaijan’s First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva on Tuesday met a delegation of French senators led by the head of the France-Azerbaijan parliamentary working group Nathalie Goulet.

Aliyeva said the recent passage of a French law criminalizing the denial of the so-called Armenian genocide in Turkey has raised concerns among the Azerbaijani public.

The first lady thanked Goulet and other senators for their just position taken during the discussion of the law in the French Senate, referring to their voting against the "genocide" bill.

She expressed hope that the constitutional council would not approve the law "because it contradicts democracy and freedom of speech".

Goulet, who is also deputy chairperson of the France-Caucasus friendship group, expressed hope that the efforts of the group would yield results.

She also voiced confidence that the relations between Azerbaijan and France would continue to develop.
