Karabakh Azeris ‘agree to referendum’ upon return home
The Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh agrees to holding a referendum on the status of the Armenia-occupied region only after a return of the Azerbaijanis displaced during the 1990s war to their homes, its leader says.
Bayram Safarov said the Armenian residents of Karabakh are living in deplorable conditions, while the separatist regime operating in the region "is trying to gain time" by dragging out talks on the long-standing conflict.
Nagorno Karabakh has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted up to one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. The separatist regime in Nagorno Karabakh declared so-called independence at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991, but it has not been recognized by the world community.
