Azeri, two Georgians killed in tanker blast in Mediterranean

A Turkish-owned tanker drowned in the Mediterranean Sea near the Albanian Port of Durres on Sunday after an explosion believed to have resulted from gas compression, killing an Azerbaijani citizen and two Georgian nationals, Turkish media reported.

The Azerbaijani national killed in the accident was the vessel’s captain, Khayyam Mammadov, Azerbaijan’s State Naval Administration said in a statement.

The other 12 crew members who were on board the Edirne tanker carrying large quantifies of fuel -- three citizens of Azerbaijan and Turkey each, four Georgian nationals and two Ukrainian citizens -- have been hospitalized.

The Edirne vessel, built in 1980, was 92 meters long and 14 meters wide, and had loading capacity of 3,850 tons.
