European court fines govt under opposition leaders’ suits
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has imposed fines on the Azerbaijani government totaling 59,200 euros based on lawsuits filed by four opposition leaders claiming their parliamentary mandates were unfairly revoked by the senior electoral body and a top court following the 2005 elections.
Azerbaijan Popular Front Party chairman Ali Karimli, Musavat official Arif Hajili, Azerbaijan Democratic Party leader Sardar Jalaloglu and Aydinlar Party head Gulamhuseyn Alibayli claimed in their suits that they had faced violation of their right to be elected freely and political discrimination.
The ECHR ordered 20,000 euros compensation for alleged pecuniary damages to Karimli, as well as 7,500 euros for moral damages to him and 3,000 euros in trial expenses.
The other three plaintiffs are to be paid 7,500 euros each for moral damages.
As for trial expenses, Alibayli is to receive 3,000 euros, while Hajili and Jalaloglu – 1,600 euros each.
