Russia’s Medvedev optimistic on Nagorno Karabakh

The Armenia-Azerbaijan dispute over Nagorno Karabakh is the only conflict in the post-Soviet space which can be settled now, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.

"The only way is to negotiate, because alternatives to negotiations do not exist. There's only a bad alternative - war," Medvedev said in an interview with Azerbaijan’s state television channel AzTV, when asked about ways and prospects for resolving the long-standing conflict.

"My answer is that over the past few years, much has been done to bring closer the positions of the parties. Prospects for an agreement, of course, do exist," the Russian president said.

"In my opinion, this may be the only conflict in the post-Soviet space which currently can be resolved. It all depends on the goodwill of the parties, on their ability and willingness to hear each other's arguments, and, frankly, there are no simple solutions," Medvedev said.

Medvedev said agreement can be reached "only on the basis of a compromise", noting that each side must "make its own way", and added that Russia will continue working to bridge differences between Baku and Yerevan.
