Moldova seeks GUAM states’ closer economic co-op

Moldova intends to continue participating in the activities of GUAM, a regional group which also includes Georgia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan, but is seeking expansion of economic cooperation within the organization, Moldovan ambassador in Baku Igor Bodiu was quoted as saying.

"We remain committed to GUAM, and it is merely necessary to expand the organization’s activity. Primarily, economic projects should be worked on well," Bodiu told Interfax Azerbaijan news agency.

According to him, despite divergent views expressed on GUAM’s efficiency in Moldovan media, Chisinau attaches great importance to the group.

"We chaired GUAM until the end of the year, and now we will transfer chairmanship to Azerbaijan. We have cooperated and will continue to cooperate within the organization, and during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship will support Baku’s initiatives in every way."

On Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat’s scheduled visit to Azerbaijan, Bodiu said it has been postponed upon mutual agreement from the end of December until the second half of January 2012.
