Rights group says Amnesty’s report on Azerbaijan biased

An international rights group has criticized Amnesty International’s recent critical report on Azerbaijan.

Though the Joint Working Group for the Implementation of International Human Rights Standards welcomed the fact that Amnesty International monitors human rights in over 150 countries and regularly compiles reports to assess the situation, it believes that these reports are often one-sided and biased. This is also the case with the report on Azerbaijan, it said.

In its criticism of Amnesty’s report, titled "The spring that never blossomed: Freedoms suppressed in Azerbaijan", the taskforce said it is clear from its title that its authors want unrest that has swept through Arab nations since the beginning of 2011 to occur in Azerbaijan and are disappointed that this scenario is not materializing in the country.

The working group stressed that the report’s authors had violated the existing principles and criteria for unbiased research and failed to use alternative sources of information.
