TI report ‘inconsistent’ with Azerbaijan’s anti-corruption efforts
Transparency International’s recent report is inconsistent with Azerbaijan’s efforts to fight corruption, deputy chairman of the ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party Ali Ahmadov has said.
"Any assessments, particularly, those issued by international organizations, should be objective and fair, and subjective views should not prevail in them," Ahmadov told reporters on Wednesday, adding that the report "does not reflect reality".
Azerbaijan ranked 143rd among 183 nations in Transparency International’s annual report on corruption levels. The country was rated as the most corrupt in the South Caucasus region in 2010. Among all neighboring countries, it surpassed only Turkmenistan in this year’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).
According to Ahmadov, Azerbaijan’s ranking in the TI report should have been much higher.
"I am not saying that there is no corruption in Azerbaijan," he said. "The Azerbaijani government has admitted this as well. However, it is working to combat corruption. The political will is there, and much work is underway and will be further done in this regard."
