Immigration poses no threat to Azerbaijan - official

Immigration does not pose a threat to Azerbaijan, an official of the country’s immigration authority has said.

Vahid Gahramanov, a department head at the State Migration Service, told reporters that information about migrants is constantly kept in the focus of attention using a single database.

Gahramanov said the migrants present in the country mainly hail from other CIS countries and neighboring Turkey.

According to him, a few years ago, Chinese people accounted for most of the immigrants in Azerbaijan. "But as a result of the measures taken by the State Migration Service jointly with the Interior Ministry, their [illegal migrants’] number was significantly reduced."

Gahramanov said further that the Migration Code has been drafted and submitted to relevant government agencies for consideration. Next year, the document is to be tabled in parliament.

The Code reflects the rights, freedoms and status of migrants, refugees and other persons of this category.
