Two men held hostage over $1.5m debt freed

Two men held hostage for eight days over $1.5 million debt have been freed by the police in Baku, according to the interior ministry.

Dayanat Ismayilov, who had lent the money, invited the two men, Mehman Vahabzada and Samid Mikayilov, to his office on November 20 under the pretext of settling the debt issue and forced them to stay there. Ismayilov said he would keep the two hostage until their debt is fully repaid and their property is signed over to him. Vahabzada and Mikayilov were released on November 28 in an operation carried out by the interior ministry’s department on combating organized crime.

Investigators established that Vahabzada and Mikayilov owed a total of 3 million manats (over $3.8 million) to a number of people.
