Azeri, Armenian clerical leaders expected to meet in conflict zone

The Azerbaijani and Armenian clerical leaders are due to meet in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone, the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO) deputy chairman Haji Sabir Hasanli told a press conference Tuesday.

Agreement to hold another meeting between CMO chairman Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazada and Armenian Catholicos Garegin II was reached during the Azerbaijani clerical leader’s visit to Armenia. A date of the meeting has yet to be scheduled.

Pashazada visited Yerevan to attend a summit of top clerics from post-Soviet countries, held on Monday and Tuesday. On its sidelines, the Azerbaijani and Armenian clerical leaders as well as Russian Patriarch Kirill held a trilateral meeting on Monday which concluded with the adoption of a statement calling for a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Hasanli added that during his visit to the Armenian capital, Pashazada visited an Azerbaijani mosque in the city center and performed Namaz.

According to Hasanli, the 18th century Juma mosque is a place of worship for the Muslims living and working in Yerevan, mainly Iran’s Azerbaijanis.

The CMO deputy chairman also dismissed the reports saying Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan openly left the premises when Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazada was addressing the CIS clerical leaders’ summit. He said Sargsyan had apologized for having to leave before the end of the meeting due to his planned meeting with the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group -- a team of diplomats brokering settlement to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
