Energy infrastructure security mulled on US Navy chief’s Baku visit
US Secretary of Navy Ray Mabus held talks with Azerbaijani leaders in Baku on Tuesday on bilateral cooperation in ensuring the security of key energy infrastructure in the resource-rich Caspian Sea, according to the US embassy in Baku.
Mabus has met with President Ilham Aliyev, Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, Navy Commander Shahin Sultanov and other officials. The US official also toured some local cultural facilities.
"I am thankful to Azerbaijan on global security, its efforts in Afghanistan, regional and European energy security," Mabus said.
During his meeting with President Aliyev, discussions focused on Azerbaijan’s contribution to the international peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan and its role in providing transportation for the peacekeeping forces, the Azerbaijani president’s press-service said.
During the talks with Minister Abiyev, the parties discussed the current state of relations between Azerbaijani and US naval forces. Mabus termed his visit as an indication of the importance Washington attaches to Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement.
