Azerbaijan says does not recognize South Ossetia ‘presidential elections’
The Azerbaijani government has said it does not recognize the so-called "presidential elections" conducted in the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia on November 13, affirming its support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said it "strongly believes that ongoing negotiation process should be continued in a constructive manner to find a viable solution to the conflict".
Georgia says the vote is illegitimate and accuses Russia of occupying part of its territory, where Moscow has based thousands of soldiers since the brief war in 2008.
Moscow recognized South Ossetia and Georgia's other rebel region, Abkhazia, after crushing a Georgian assault to reassert control over the breakaway province in August 2008.
Like Abkhazia, South Ossetia threw off Georgian rule in wars in the early 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
