Women’s marriage age raised in Azerbaijan

The legal age for women’s marriages in Azerbaijan has been increased by one year to 18, according to changes to the country’s laws passed in parliament Tuesday.

Besides the Family Code, Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code was also amended at the sitting of the Milli Majlis, to toughen punitive action for forced marriages.

Under the amendments, those forcing women to marry against their will are to face fines worth 2,000 to 3,000 manats (over $3,800) or a jail sentence of up to two years. If these offenses affect underage persons, the fines amount to 3,000 to 4,000 manats (up to over $5,100) and the violators will face up to four years in prison.
