Law on ex-presidents passed in Azerbaijan

The law on providing support for former Azerbaijani presidents was adopted in its third hearing during a Tuesday sitting of the Azerbaijani parliament.

The constitutional law applies to all presidents who led the country after it gained independence from the Soviet Union, chairman of a parliamentary committee, Ali Huseynli, said.

According to him, the ex-president will receive a pension amounting to 50 percent of the incumbent president’s salary.

In the case of the death of the ex-president, his wife will receive these retirement benefits. In the absence of his wife, his children will receive the pension when they reach the age of 18.

The law provides the ex-president with a state car, a driver and three bodyguards.

Ex-presidents and their spouses will also be provided with diplomatic passports. Their inviolability will be protected by the law.

Besides people who have held the presidency, the law applies to those who acted as presidents but died, presidents whose powers were suspended, as well as members of their families. The law does not apply to impeached presidents.

The constitutional law will go into effect only after it is voted upon in parliament again in six months.
