OSCE includes Novruz in its list of holidays
The OSCE has included Novruz, a holiday marked in Azerbaijan and other countries stretching from the Caucasus to Central Asia, in its official list of holidays, according to the Azerbaijani foreign ministry.
The decision was passed by OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier on the proposal of Azerbaijan’s representation at the OSCE.
Novruz, which marks the advent of spring and the beginning of the New Year, is celebrated on March 21, the day of the vernal equinox. It is an official holiday in Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Novruz is also celebrated by other Turkic peoples living in Russia, Ukraine and other countries.
The UN General Assembly in 2010 recognized the International Day of Novruz, describing it a spring festival of Persian origin which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. During the meeting of a United Nations committee held in late 2009 in Abu Dhabi, Novruz was officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
