Election laws to undergo 'technical changes'
Azerbaijan's election laws will undergo only technical changes, the
President's Office Chief-of-Staff Ramiz Mehdiyev told the press
Tuesday.
The changes were recently recommended by the Council of Europe experts. The parliament is due to table a bill on amendments and supplements to the Election Code in the coming days.
As before, the opposition calls for the formation of election commissions on equal terms. 18 seats in the commissions are currently equally split among pro-government, opposition and independent members, but the opposition claims independent members' pro-government slant.
Mehdiyev said the draft law does not cover the issue. He added that the effective Election Code adopted by the legislature and endorsed by the president allows to hold democratic elections in the country.
The presidential election will be held in Azerbaijan this October.
